The next morning at breakfast, I talked to Papa about Vandar and Gemma. He agreed to let her go back for a short time. I couldn’t say I wasn’t a little bit jealous of my sisters getting to spend time with their fiancés. Although, I don’t believe it would have changed Houston’s and my situation or marriage. I gave Papa a hug after we finished breakfast since Connor and I were heading to the airport.

When the plane landed in New York, anxiety filled me. I had texted Houston this morning and during our extremely long layover, both of which never received a response. Guessing he was a bust, I figured I wouldn’t see him until tomorrow at breakfast since he would be at the club tonight. With traffic at this time of the evening, we would never make it back, even if he was there.

I’d been right.

Stepping into the penthouse, I clearly was the only one there. I took my bag upstairs and unpacked. It didn’t take long since I was only gone a short time.

I sat on the bed and felt sad. Not because I was back in New York, but because Houston wasn’t here. Picking up my phone, I called Christabel.

“Hi, Lore,” she greeted.

“Hey, Chris.”

“Oh no, you sound sad. What’s going on?”

“I just got home, and Houston isn’t here. He’s working.” The second the words left my mouth, I knew how pathetic I sounded.

“You know what you need to do.”

“Sure, I know.” I scoffed. “Take a shower, read another book, and go to sleep.” It had become my normal routine. Well, that and studying.

“Nope. You need to pull out your inner Gemma,” Christabel told me.

I laughed. Since we were young, anytime we wanted to be wild, we called it our “Inner Gemma.” Suddenly an idea flashed in my mind. A brilliant one.

“Chris, you’re a genius.”
